The Medtronic Defibrillator Leads

Defibrillators are medical devices used to deliver a therapeutic dose of electric energy with the goal of terminating arrhythmia (irregular heart beat). Medtronic specializes in the manufacture of implantable cardioverter defibrillators, or ICDs, and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy-Defibrillators (CRT-Ds) which are surgically implanted in the patient. The purpose of an ICD is to constantly monitor the heart’s rhythm – and to regulate it when appropriate by delivering automatic shocks.

The four Medtronic lead wire models that have been recalled attach to the ICD or CRT-D at the site of implantation (usually shoulder) and then used to connect the device to the heart. It is this lead wire that delivers the shock needed to correct arrhythmia. However, it is this same lead wire that has been linked to five deaths and several injuries.

Sadly, the very device designed to administer life-saving shocks to the heart has now been proven to cause considerable damage in the event of a lead wire fracture.

The recalled lead wire models are:

  • Sprint Fidelis 6930
  • Sprint Fidelis 6931
  • Sprint Fidelis 6948
  • Sprint Fidelis 6949

If you or a loved one has had one of the above lead wire models, or if you have a Medtronic ICD or CRT-D and aren't sure what model lead you have, you should contact Douglas & London to speak with an attorney immediately.
